Qova

The Riverside Collection · Tiracol, South Maharashtra

A home for people who are still deciding what life looks like, and want somewhere worthy of the answer.

Qova takes its bones from Mexican hacienda architecture: walled courtyards, deep arches, sun-warmed plaster. It rebuilds that language for the light of this coast, its heat and its habit of living outdoors.

The name comes from the word cove: a place slightly removed from the world, but open to the sky.

Tierra y Cal, translated for the coast.

A day at Qova

Mornings begin in the courtyard. Afternoons pass through shaded rooms. In the evening the house rises to its roof, where a plunge pool and an open lounge look across the river to the western horizon.

The house

Each villa rises over three levels, with the roof above. The lower ground floor holds parking, a staff room and storage. The ground floor is the heart of the house: the living room, a double-height dining room behind a tall glass arch, the kitchen, a games room, a guest bedroom and a verandah that opens to the pool. Three bedrooms and a family lounge share the first floor, and each villa also has a conservatory. On the roof, a sculptural metal canopy shades the plunge pool, a bar and an open lounge.

Materials

Limewash in clay and ochre. Hand-planed teak. Wrought iron. Colour in the furniture, texture in the walls. The pool is lined in deep jewel-toned tiles that keep the water dark and cool against the warm walls.

The setting

Qova is in Tiracol, where the river meets the Arabian Sea and the land is still largely undisturbed. Both villas face the sea breeze, among open skies and laterite earth, close to the beaches and villages of North Goa but away from its busier stretches.
